Remediation
Property Damage
- Ash deposited by forest fires is a combination of nutrients and minerals left behind by burned wood
- Ash deposited by forest fires is messy
- Ash deposited by forest fires may have a smoky odor
- Ash/odors deposited by forest fires can be removed by:
- Gentle sweeping of indoor/hard surfaces followed by wet mopping
- Use of HEPA filtered vacuums
- Washing exterior surfaces with a garden hose
- Washing clothing with detergent and chlorine bleach
- Cleaning wood furniture/fixtures with mild cleaning solution and soft brush and allow to dry
- Avoid washing ash into storm drains if possible
- Ash can be disposed of as regular waste
Bodily Injury
Ash deposited by forest fires is generally not harmful;
Ash should be kept wet with as little water as possible to prevent it from becoming airborne as it can cause throat/nose irritation, especially if fire retardants have been used;
Skin contact with ash should be avoided as it can cause skin irritation to those with sensitive skin especially if fire retardants have been used
Well fitting dust masks or N-95 respirators may be worn during cleanup to prevent irritation
What We Do
Evaluate whether a structure has been impacted by wildfire exposure and assess the extent of that impact,
so that a legally defendable insurance coverage determination and appropriate monetary allocation can be made.
